please read this essay, and keep in mind the following question:

how is contemporary painting representative of the new visual state, imposed by the evolution of the new means of production?

apply leger’s use of contemporary and new to 2013, while he applies it to 1914.

value study, grayscales:

mixing a black from primaries:

Color Mixing Guide from golden’s website

Mixing to achieve black and gray using Phthalo Blue G/S, Quinacridone Magenta and Hansa Yellow Medium

Step 1: Mix 1 part of Phthalo Blue (Green Shade) with 2 parts Quinacridone Magenta. The mixture will be correct when you perceive it to be the deepest blue without being described as purple. This is an approximate primary blue.

Step 2: Mix 2 parts primary blue with 1 part Hansa Yellow Medium.

Step 3: Once you master making your own black, create a grayscale like the following, by slowly introducing your black to titanium white.

download value study_grayscale.pdf for a guide.

———-

-complete 2 grayscales:

one with self mixed black + titanium white

one with store bought black + titanium white

-employ a mid tone gray:

mix with water in various amounts, and record results

mix with matte medium in various amounts, and record the results

mix with matte medium + water in various quantities, and record the results.

Photo Study

-start with a photo provided in class.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

study 1- geometric distillation
-distill the portrait down to simple geometric shapes using 5 values.

study 2- organic distillation
-using the same 5 values, further develop the information in the photograph into more realistic organic shapes

study 3- smooth gradient
-using the same 5 values, now make an attempt to blend these areas of value into smooth gradients, so no hard edge lines exist.
